Over time, I have learned some quick-fix tips to help with confidence, and I have learned powerful ways to boost my confidence instantly. Luckily, confidence is a skill that we can fine-tune, just like you would an instrument. All you need is some practice, and we can start today.

1. Practice Gratitude

This step is simple, but powerful. Feelings of gratitude perpetuate strong feelings of happiness and wellbeing. Who doesn’t want more of that?

Begin by sitting comfortably. Close your eyes, and take a few deep breaths. If you’re feeling very low, it can be easiest to start with feeling gratitude for someone you love, or even your pet. Hold the feeling in your heart. Now, try and extend that feeling towards yourself. Feel gratitude for your health, for your family and friends, for your experiences, and for all of your unique abilities.

2. Write Love Notes to Yourself

Pull out a notepad (or use the notes app in your phone) and quickly jot down all of the things that you love about yourself. Start small if you have to: Your eyes. Your hair. Your laugh. Your smile. Then go bigger: Write about how you make people feel, and how great you are at your job. Write down all of your other stellar qualities as if you were listing your strengths on a resume.

Bonus tip: Decorate your mirror with colourful post-its with your love notes so you see them when you wake up in the morning.

3. Try a ‘Power Pose’

This is another simple tool that you can practice now. Notice your body language at this moment. Are your shoulders hunched? Arms crossed? Leaned over? Hands near your neck? These are all low-power postures that can subconsciously add to your low mood.

Instead, try and practice a ‘power pose’: think of Wonder Woman! Draw your shoulders back, open your chest wide, plant your hands on you hips and lift your chin high. This might seem superficial, but hear me out. While I believe that real confidence always comes from within, walking around wearing sweat pants will not do any favours for your self-esteem. Trust me, I spent my college years wearing leggings everyday and it was a pretty good indication of my low confidence.


Go to your closet and pull out your nicest blouse or shirt, or put on your favourite piece of jewellery. I have a pair of earrings that are dazzling and diamond-y and totally me. When I put them on, I feel like I can put my best foot forward. It’s a small step, but it instantly boosts my self-confidence.

5. Talk About It

Talk to someone you trust, your spouse, friend, or a family member and tell them how you’re feeling. You don’t have to get into the details if you don’t want to. Just say that you’re feeling down about yourself. Since this problem is one that is perpetuated in your mind, sometimes it helps to talk to someone else who sees you as you truly are: beautiful, unique, and loved.
